Garden Picket Fence Installation

In July 2025, our team at DW Garden Maintenance was called to carry out a front garden transformation for a property that needed more structure and tidiness around the boundary. The homeowners were looking for a solution that would clearly define their front garden space without blocking light or making the area feel closed in. After a site inspection and consultation, we proposed a timber picket fence installation – a charming and practical solution well-suited to front gardens.

What followed was a clean, professional installation that combined careful preparation, expert joinery, and thoughtful finishing. The result was a low-height timber fence that blends into the neighbourhood while giving the homeowners more privacy, better curb appeal, and easier maintenance.

Project Goals & Site Conditions

The client’s front garden had gradually become overgrown. A dense shrub dominated the space, and weeds were creeping into gravel paths. More critically, there was no defined boundary separating the garden from the pavement, making the property appear untended and exposed.

The client requested:

  • A visible but friendly boundary
  • A gated space safe for small pets
  • Minimal disruption to light and views
  • A timber finish that blended with their home and garden

Step-by-Step Walkthrough

1. Clearing & Preparing the Ground

We began by removing the overgrown shrubbery and weeds. The root systems were fully dug out to prevent regrowth and the ground was levelled.

Once clear, we laid string lines to mark a perfectly straight fence line and determine even post spacing. This step is key for achieving a professional, straight-edged fence that looks great from any angle.

We always ensure that clearing is done methodically. Removing plant matter down to the root and disposing of it offsite helps prevent regrowth and ensures the new fence isn’t undermined by leftover debris. The garden also received an edge tidy-up along the paths, keeping the area presentable as the main build began.

2. Post Hole Digging & Fence Line Setup

We manually dug post holes to approximately 45cm deep, spacing them evenly along the line. Each timber fence post was set in place using a combination of concrete and gravel for strength and drainage.

We checked every post for level and alignment to guarantee the fence would run straight and remain stable long term. It may seem like a simple step, but proper post setting is what gives your fence durability against wind, weather, and pressure over time.

This phase laid the structural foundation for the rest of the installation. For a similar example of structural precision, see our Timber Decking Installation Project.

3. Installing Rails, Pickets & the Gate

Once the posts cured, we fixed horizontal timber rails between them. Onto these, we mounted pressure-treated pickets with pointed tops for a traditional finish.

Spacing was carefully measured to balance visibility and security — ideal for dogs while still keeping the garden open to light.

We also ensured the gate latch and hinges were adjusted to suit the slight slope of the garden, so everything opened and closed smoothly without warping or dragging. All timber was pressure-treated to withstand outdoor conditions and was installed with ventilation gaps to prevent rot.

The pickets were cut to follow the slope of the garden, and the corner posts were trimmed and rounded for a refined touch. The timber’s natural colour already matched the home’s style, and the client was offered post-project timber treatment advice.

4. Final Cleanup & Inspection

We finished with a thorough site clean-up. All green waste, soil, and timber offcuts were taken away. The paths were swept, and garden edges raked back into place. A final walkthrough with the client confirmed everything was aligned with the brief.

Why Choose a Picket Fence?

Picket fencing is ideal for homeowners who want structure and style without overwhelming their space. It blends traditional charm with modern practicality and is especially popular in:

  • Cottage gardens and period homes
  • Family-friendly properties
  • Pet-safe outdoor spaces
  • Small front gardens

Advantages of this install:

  • Lightweight and attractive
  • Durable with proper treatment
  • Allows airflow and visibility
  • Doesn’t block sunlight
  • Adds charm to property frontage

Beyond appearance, picket fences offer peace of mind. Pets are kept safe, young children have clearer boundaries, and your garden feels more purposeful without feeling boxed in. The open design maintains airflow and ensures you don’t lose connection with your street or neighbours. It also keeps the property feeling light, while defining space in a way that’s practical and inviting.

Unlike more imposing fencing solutions, picket fences preserve visibility and reduce the visual heaviness that can shrink a garden’s perceived size. When treated and maintained, they offer impressive longevity and continued aesthetic value year after year.

They also pair beautifully with flower beds, hedges, and gravel paths, giving you plenty of design freedom. Whether you’re going for rustic cottage or tidy modern, picket fences are highly adaptable.

In short, a well-installed picket fence does more than mark a boundary — it enhances the character of your property.
